Thomas Aquinas was born to a noble family in the southern area of Italy. His father was the Count of Aquino. As the member of a noble family Thomas was educated at the finest of schools I Italty – Monte Cassino where he was educated by Benedictine monks and the University of Naples. During his education, it was noted that Thomas far exceeded others with his accomplishments. He was devout in his faith and joined the Dominican of Naples. However, his family was greatly against his decision as they believed that the position of a monk was very low for someone of such social rank. The family kidnapped Thomas and kept him confined for two years. During his confinement, his family tried their best to break his fidelity to the Dominican and his faith but the efforts of the family failed. Because of his fidelity, God gave him the gift of perfect chastity, which earned him the title of “Angel Doctor”.
St Thomas continued to study after becoming a monk at the Cologne in France where he became known as the “dumb ox” because he was very large in size and was very quiet. At the age of thirty two, Thomas received his doctorate. While in Paris, St Thomas became a friend of the King of France. Due to his many writings and preaching, St Thomas became well known for his intellectual theology, logic and use of language. He was appointed to various positions and given honors by Pope Urban IV and Clement IV, but he declined to accept ecclesiastical dignity. St Thomas was canonized in 1323 and he was declared Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius V.

Prayer to St Thomas Aquinas
Angel of Schools at the bidding of Peter, thousands today are saluting thee thus. We too are claiming thy care and thy counsel. Angel of Schools, be an Angel to us.
Come to our aid when thou hearest us calling.
Light up the dark, make the rough places plain. Bring to our thoughts the unknown or forgotten. Give us the words that we seek for in vain.
Height: 8.8cm.
