During the 13th century, the Moors occupied the country of Spain. In the town of Atocha, near Madrid, was over run by Moors. The Moors imprisoned the Catholic men of the town as criminals, and held them in dungeons. At that time it was customary for the conquerors to deny their prisoners food and water. Those provisions were to be supplied by the prisoner’s family. The Moors issued an order that only children under the age of 12 could enter the prison to bring food and water to the captives. Those without young children slowly began to starve.
The mothers, sister, and wives of those prisoners began to pray to the Lady of Atocha to bring comfort to their loved ones. Before long, word came from the prison that all of the prisoners, even those without children, were being fed. The children who were allowed to bring food to the prison reported seeing a young boy, dressed as a pilgrim, carrying a basket of food and a gourd filled with water to the childless prisoners. When the women of Atocha heard this, they knew that their prayers had been answered and that the Lady of Atocha had sent her Son to aid their loved ones.
Eventually, the Moorish jailers heard of this miracle and tried to catch the child. But they were never able to find Him.
