St Stephen

Patron of Deacons and Stone Masons

Figurine comes nicely displayed in a clear fronted box with the the Story of the saint on the outside and a prayer card inside.

Stephen has the distinction of being the first martyr for the Faith.  He was one of the first seven deacons ordained by the Apostles.  His good works and eloquent preaching gained for him the envy and hatred of the Jewish Sanhedrin which had him stoned to death in the year 33. His dying words are well known: “Lord, lay not this sin to their charge” and to their efficacy, is attributed the conversion of Paul, who as Saul of Tarsus, assisted in the martyrdom of Stephen.   All we know of Stephen as shared through St Luke’s writings in the book “Acts of the Apostles”.  Acts describes how the Apostles ordained seven deacons and charged them with looking after the care of the widows and the poor.  Stephen is the most famous of these first deacons.  Stephen is the patron of deacons, stone masons, casket-makers and horses.

The Prayer to St Stephen

Lord, we celebrate the entrance of Saint Stephen into eternal glory.  He died praying for those who killed him. Help us to imitate his goodness and to love our enemies.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
