It is said that Dominic’s mother, Blessed Joan Aza, had a vision that her unborn child was a dog that would set the world on fire with a torch that it carried in its mouth. When Dominic was baptized, his mother had another vision where she saw a star that was shining from his chest. As an adult, Dominic dedicated his life to bringing heretics (those who had dissented from church doctrine) back to the faith. In addition to establishing monasteries and convents, Dominic founded the Order of Friars Preachers, (the Dominicans) and his mother’s vision of a dog with a torch in its mouth became their symbol. He also was responsible for sending friars and priests to the University of Paris, the University of Spain and Oxford University. During his ministry, Dominic became discouraged at the progress of his mission. A vision of Our Lady came to him and showed him a wreath of roses. She instructed him to say the rosary daily and to teach it to all who would listen. In time, true faith brought many of heretics with whom Dominic worked back to the fold. Like his Mother, Dominic is said to have had his own visions. In one he saw a beggar who would do great things for the faith. He met the beggar from his vision the very next day. Upon meeting him he embraced the stranger and said, “You are my companion and must walk with me. If we hold together, no earthly power can withstand us.” The man from his vision was St Francis of Assisi

Prayer to St Dominic
O Holy priest of God and glorious Patriarch St Dominc, thou who was a friend, the well-beloved son and confidant of the Queen of Heaven and didst work so many miracles by the power of the Holy Rosary, have regard for my necessities. On earth you opened your heart to the miseries of your fellow men and your hands were strong to help them; now in heaven your charity has not grown less nor has your power wanted. Pray for me to the Mother of the Rosary and to her divine Son, for I have great confidence that through your assistance I shall obtain the favour I so much desire.
